Poznan Christmas Market

Poznan, the capital of the Wielkopolskie voivodeship in western Poland, runs its Christmas season as Betlejem Poznanskie across three locations from mid-November to early January. This guide covers the dates, the food, the croissant tradition and how to plan a December visit.

Short answer

Yes. Betlejem Poznanskie 2026/27 opens on 14 November 2026 and ends on 6 January 2027, with markets on the MTP grounds, Plac Wolnosci and Stary Rynek in Poznan.

Poznan, the capital of the Wielkopolskie voivodeship (Greater Poland) in western Poland, on the Warta river, has one of the more structured Christmas seasons in the country: rather than a single market, the city runs a multi-site event called Betlejem Poznanskie, spread across the fair grounds, a square and the Old Market Square, and running from mid-November into the first week of January. The city's own portal frames it that way, and the operator's page carries the exact dates for each site. Around it sits a December calendar of ice sculpture, a horse fair and a croissant tradition with EU protection, plus a compact, walkable centre that makes a winter weekend straightforward. This guide lays out what the official pages actually say: the dates, the food, the transport, the weather and what is open in December.

Are There Christmas Markets In Poznan?

Yes, several at once. Poznan's Christmas event is Betlejem Poznanskie, and the 2026/27 edition runs from 14 November 2026 to 6 January 2027 across three locations: the MTP fair grounds (14 to 20 November), Plac Wolnosci (from 20 November) and Stary Rynek, the Old Market Square (from 21 November). The operator's own page carries all three date ranges.

That three-site structure is the first thing to understand. The market does not sit in one place for one continuous run. The MTP grounds open the season first, for about a week. Then Plac Wolnosci and Stary Rynek, the two sites people tend to picture when they imagine a Christmas market, take over and run through to 6 January. The Stary Rynek site is the one framed by the Town Hall and the rows of merchant houses, and it is the one that gives the season its postcard look.

The square itself is worth understanding before the stalls go up. The Town Hall, home of the Museum of the History of the City of Poznan since 1954, stands at Stary Rynek 1 in a building dated to the early 14th century. Its museum interior is closed for renovation, with no reopening date published, but the facade, the square and the famous noon goats are separate from that closure. The Old Market Square guide covers the square and the goats and Town Hall guide covers the clock tradition, if you want the full background before arriving in December.

One honest caveat for the season: the goats appear every day at noon, and since recently also at 3 pm, but whether they run during the current facade works is not stated on any official page. Do not build an itinerary around a guaranteed show; check on site.

Where Are The Betlejem Poznanskie Markets Held?

The three sites are the MTP fair grounds (14 November to 20 December 2026), Plac Wolnosci (20 November 2026 to 6 January 2027) and Stary Rynek (21 November 2026 to 6 January 2027). Each date range comes from the operator's own page, and the MTP site closes early while the other two run past Christmas into January.

The MTP grounds, the same complex that hosts Poznan Game Arena from 23 to 25 October 2026 and Cavaliada from 10 to 13 December 2026, carry the opening week of the market. If you are in Poznan in the first half of November, that is your site. Plac Wolnosci sits at the western end of Swiety Marcin street, and Stary Rynek is the heart of the old town, a few minutes' walk east. Between them the season covers both a fair-ground version and a historic-square version.

Site Opens Closes Character
MTP grounds 14 Nov 2026 20 Dec 2026 Fair-ground site, opens the season
Plac Wolnosci 20 Nov 2026 6 Jan 2027 Square site on Swiety Marcin
Stary Rynek 21 Nov 2026 6 Jan 2027 Old Market Square, the classic setting

The Stary Rynek site is the one to plan an evening around. The square is pedestrian-friendly, ringed with coloured merchant houses, and the Croissant Museum sits right there at Stary Rynek 41/2, entrance from Klasztorna Street 23. The Poznan in winter guide and the best time to visit guide both treat late November and December as a genuine second season for the city, and the market dates are the reason.

Getting between the sites is simple. Plac Wolnosci and Stary Rynek are connected by tram lines along Swiety Marcin, and the timed ZTM tickets described below cover every zone. The public transport guide has the full detail on tickets, machines and the PEKA card.

What Can You Eat And Drink At The Poznan Christmas Market?

The signature item is the rogal swietomarcinski, the St Martin's croissant, a Protected Geographical Indication registered by Commission Regulation (EC) No 1070/2008 of 30 October 2008. The Croissant Museum on Stary Rynek runs shows about it, with an English croissant and goat show at 14:00, about 65 minutes, and tasting included.

The croissant is the local Christmas food, and it has a legal status most regional pastries do not. It is a PGI, not a PDO, registered in October 2008, which means only bakers following the registered recipe in the defined area may sell it under the name. The croissant is filled with a white poppy seed and almond mixture, and the season for it peaks around 11 November, St Martin's Day, when Swiety Marcin street celebrates its name day. The St Martin's Day guide covers that street festival, and the St Martin croissant guide covers the pastry itself.

One thing not to promise: a parade on 11 November. The 2025 edition had no parade, replaced by an all-day "Miasteczko Imieninowe" event, and the 2026 programme had not been published when this guide was researched. The street celebrates its name day, and the CK Zamek cultural centre organises it, but the format is announced year by year.

The Croissant Museum is the place to learn the story properly, and its December schedule is friendly to English speakers. The museum's own page lists the show times:

Show Language Time Notes
Croissant and goat show English 14:00 About 65 min, tasting included
Extra croissant show English 15:30 Only when the 14:00 show is full
Croissant show Polish 11:00, 12:30, 14:00, 15:30 Plus 17:00 on Saturdays

The English 14:00 show runs daily in July and August, on Saturdays and Sundays all year, and on other days shown in the booking calendar. Arrive 10 minutes before the start. Printed hours are Sunday to Thursday 11:00-15:30 and Saturday 11:00-17:00; Friday hours are not listed, so do not plan a Friday visit without checking. Ticket prices are not published outside the booking widget, so treat them as on the booking page.

Beyond the croissant, the market stalls carry the usual Polish winter repertoire: grilled meats, soups, mulled wine and hot chocolate. For the sit-down version of Poznan food, the Poznan food guide and the best restaurants guide cover the full range, and the Michelin Guide Poland 2026 lists 25 restaurants from Poznan and surroundings, with Muga holding one star and Bib Gourmands for Fromazeria, POSTO, SPOT., TU. REStAURANT and Farmer & Sons in Skorzewo. A private food tour is a good pairing with a market evening: Check availability for the operator's live listing.

Ice sculptures lit up at an outdoor winter festival in Poznan

Is The POZnan Ice Festival Worth Planning Around?

Yes, if your dates match. The 20th POZnan Ice Festival runs 11 to 13 December 2026: on 11 December a small sculpture contest from 16:00 to 18:30, on 12 December Speed Ice Carving from 11:00, and on 13 December the main competition from 9:00 to 17:00 with children's workshops from 12:00 to 15:00. The city's page carries all three days.

The ice festival is the December event that most often escapes notice, because visitors from outside Poland hear about the Christmas market and nothing else. Sculptors work in public across the weekend, and the timetable above is the official one. Mid-December is also when the market on Stary Rynek is in full swing, so the two combine naturally into one weekend.

The same stretch of December brings Cavaliada to the MTP grounds, a horse fair running 10 to 13 December 2026 per the MTP calendar. That is a lot of December event density for a city of 534,239 people, and it is the honest reason a weekend in mid-December books up.

For travellers weighing Poznan against other Polish cities for a Christmas trip, the which Christmas market in Poland is the best answer page compares the main options, including Poznan's multi-site format.

What Is The Weather Like In Poznan At Christmas?

WMO's 1991-2020 climate normals for the Poznan station show a December mean of 0.9 C, with a mean daily high of 3.2 C and a mean daily low of -1.4 C, plus 40.1 mm of precipitation and 17.5 frost days. November averages 7.1 C high and 1.8 C low, so the market season starts cold and gets colder.

Those normals are the honest basis for packing. Expect temperatures around freezing at night in December, with afternoon highs a few degrees above zero, and plan for roughly half the month with frost. Snow is possible but not guaranteed; the does it snow in Poznan question has its own answer page. Rain and sleet are at least as likely as powder snow, so waterproof boots beat fashion.

Month Mean high C Mean low C Mean C Precipipitation mm Frost days
November 7.1 1.8 4.4 33.6 9.2
December 3.2 -1.4 0.9 40.1 17.5
January 2.1 -2.9 -0.4 37.7 19.7

The market sites are outdoors, and the Stary Rynek site runs to 6 January, so anyone staying past New Year should expect January conditions: the coldest month of the three, with a mean low of -2.9 C. The Poznan weather by month guide has the full twelve-month table from the same WMO normals.

Indoor escape options matter in this weather. The Poznan rainy day guide doubles as a cold-day guide, and the museums section below lists what is actually open on a December afternoon.

How Do You Get To Poznan For The Christmas Market?

From abroad, fly into Poznan-Lawica Airport, from which ZTM bus lines 148 and 159 run to Poznan Glowny, each every 15 minutes at peak and every 20 minutes off-peak, meaning a bus every 7 to 8 minutes at peak. From Berlin, direct trains take about 4 h 30 to 5 h 30; from Warsaw, about 2 h 20 to 3 h 20. Always check the PKP Intercity planner for your day.

Those train ranges are reported figures, not timetable promises: use them for planning and confirm on the operator's planner. The Berlin to Poznan train guide and the Warsaw to Poznan train guide carry the detail, and there are also guides for Wroclaw, Krakow, Gdansk and Prague.

One border detail matters for the Berlin route: Poland has notified temporary internal border controls at its land borders with Germany and Lithuania, running from 2 October 2026 to 30 March 2027. Carry a passport or national ID on the train or bus from Berlin. The EU's Entry/Exit System has been fully operational at all external Schengen border crossing points since 10 April 2026, so visa-exempt visitors from outside the EU, including US and UK passport holders, may have fingerprints and a photo registered at first entry. The ETIAS travel authorisation start date and fee are not settled in any source this desk could verify: check the EU's official ETIAS site before you travel.

For flights, the flights to Poznan guide covers routes, and the Poznan airport guide plus the airport to city centre guide cover the arrival side. Standard ZTM tickets apply on the airport buses; the fare table is below.

ZTM ticket Zones Full price Reduced
15 minutes All zones 5 zl 2.50 zl
45 minutes All zones 7 zl 3.50 zl
90 minutes All zones 9 zl 4.50 zl

24 hours A+B+C+D 24 zl 12 zl
7 days Zone A 59 zl 29.50 zl
7 days A+B+C+D 94 zl 47 zl

Timed tickets are valid in all zones with transfers allowed, and real travel time counts. A weekend quirk worth knowing: a 24-hour ticket validated between 20:00 Friday and 24:00 Saturday stays valid until 24:00 Sunday. There is no contactless bank-card payment on trams and buses yet; the PEKA modernisation contract that will allow it was signed in 2026, with effects expected in 2028. Today you buy timed tickets in apps, machines or on a PEKA card. The fine for travelling without a valid ticket is 350 zl, or 175 zl if paid within 7 days.

Where Should You Stay For The Poznan Christmas Market?

Stay within walking distance of Stary Rynek if the market is the point of the trip: the Old Town and city centre put the square, the Croissant Museum and Plac Wolnosci on foot or one tram ride away. The where to stay in Poznan guide maps the districts, and the Old Town hotels guide narrows it to the streets around the square.

The practical logic of a Christmas trip is that you will walk back to your hotel in the cold, late, after mulled wine. Being inside the ring of the old town removes any transport decision at the end of the evening. The Poznan city centre guide describes the area around Swiety Marcin and the Jezyce guide describes the district just west, whose Rynek Jezycki market hall trades Monday to Saturday 6:00-20:00, with only some florists open on Sunday.

Which Museums Are Open During The Christmas Season?

The National Museum's branches are closed on Mondays and free on Tuesdays: the Royal Castle (Tue-Wed 10:00-16:00, Thu 10:00-18:00, Fri 10:00-20:00, Sat-Sun 10:00-17:00, normal 20 zl, reduced 13 zl) and the Museum of Musical Instruments (normal 15 zl, reduced 10 zl) are the reliable December picks. The Town Hall museum interior and the Ethnographic Museum are closed for renovation.

The closure list matters as much as the open list. The Town Hall museum interior is closed every day, with no reopening date published. The Ethnographic Museum at Grobla 25 is closed for renovation. The National Museum's main Gallery of Painting and Sculpture at Aleje Marcinkowskiego 9 does not have published hours or prices in any source this desk could verify, so check before going.

What is open, with verified hours and prices:

Museum Hours Normal / reduced zl Free day
Royal Castle (Applied Arts) Tue-Wed 10:00-16:00, Thu to 18:00, Fri to 20:00, Sat-Sun to 17:00 20 / 13 Tuesday
Museum of Musical Instruments Tue-Wed 10:00-16:00, Thu 10:00-18:00, Fri 10:00-20:00, Sat-Sun 10:00-17:00 15 / 10 Tuesday
Museum of Armaments (Citadel) Nov-Feb Tue-Sun 10:00-16:00 15 / 10 Tuesday
Enigma Cipher Centre Tue-Fri 9:00-18:00, Sat-Sun 10:00-19:00 35 / 29 none listed
Porta Posnania Tue-Fri 9:00-18:00, Sat-Sun 10:00-19:00 35 / 29 none listed

The Enigma Cipher Centre on Swiety Marcin 78 is the winter pick with real substance: it tells the story of Marian Rejewski, Jerzy Rozycki and Henryk Zygalski, the three Polish codebreakers whose pre-war Enigma work the centre's timeline names, with exhibitions and audio guides in Polish, English, German, Russian and Ukrainian. The Enigma Cipher Centre guide covers it fully, and the Poznan museums guide gives the whole picture. The Poznan City Card guide explains the card: 24 hours costs 65 zl with transport or 59 zl without, and it gives free entry to most museums, though partners such as Enigma (21/17 zl) and Porta Posnania (21 zl) are discounted rather than free.

The Royal Castle also has seasonal exhibitions worth checking: "Anna Krzymanska. Medale i plakiety" runs 25 September 2026 to 10 January 2027, and "Japonska Fala", a display of ukiyo-e woodblock prints, runs 1 September to 15 November 2026.

What Else Can You Do In Poznan In December?

Beyond the market, the reliable December options are the Cathedral on Ostrow Tumski (crypts and tower open 1 March to 15 November only, so in December go for the church itself), the Fara basilica (open daily 6:00-19:30, free individual visits), the New Zoo (winter hours 9:00-16:00, 20 zl for every visitor) and the Old Zoo, which is free. The Maltanka railway and the Palm House are closed in winter.

The seasonal closures deserve emphasis, because a guide that ignores them sends people to locked gates. The cathedral's crypts and viewing tower, with the tombs of Mieszko I and Boleslaw Chrobry, run only 1 March to 15 November. The Palm House in Park Wilsona is closed for rebuilding, with part of the pavilions due back towards the end of 2028 and works until 2030. The Maltanka park railway's 2026 season ended on 27 September. None of these is a December activity.

What works in December is the layer of the city that is indoors or genuinely winter-proof. Ostrow Tumski and the Srodka district across the bridge are atmospheric in cold weather, and a private walking tour covers both: Check availability on the operator's listing. The Srodka mural, "Opowiesc srodecka z trebaczem na dachu i kotem w tle", on the tenement at ul. Srodka 3, dates from 2015 and is an easy stop on that walk.

Day trips also work in winter, with the caveat that hours shorten. Kornik Castle is open Tuesday to Sunday in the low season, 10:00-15:15 with last entry 14:30, and the 2026 tourist season closes on 14 December, so a December visit means the first half of the month. The Kornik Arboretum is open daily 10:00-16:00 from November to March. Biskupin is open 9:00-16:00 from November to March, closed 1 January, Easter Sunday, 1 November and 25 December. A guided day trip combining Rogalin and Kornik from Poznan is the easiest winter format: Check availability for the current listing.

Day trip Winter hours Tickets Closed
Kornik Castle Tue-Sun 10:00-15:15, last entry 14:30 (to 14 Dec 2026) 40 / 20 zl Mondays
Kornik Arboretum Daily 10:00-16:00 (Nov-Mar) 10 / 7 zl open daily
Biskupin 9:00-16:00 (Nov-Mar) 28 / 19 zl 1 Jan, Easter Sun, 1 Nov, 25 Dec
Rogalin Palace Museum Tue-Sun 9:00-16:00, park 9:00-16:30 20 / 13 zl Mondays, 24-26 Dec, 31 Dec, 1 Jan

For families, the Poznan with kids guide rates the zoos and indoor options by season, and the free things to do guide lists what costs nothing, including the Old Zoo and Tuesday museum entry. Stary Browar, the shopping and arts complex at ul. Polwiejska 42, is open Monday to Saturday 9:00-21:00 and Sunday 10:00-20:00 on trading Sundays, and doubles as a warm place to spend a cold afternoon.

Common Questions About The Poznan Christmas Market

Are there Christmas markets in Poznan?

Yes. Betlejem Poznanskie, the city's Christmas event, runs from 14 November 2026 to 6 January 2027 across three sites: the MTP grounds, Plac Wolnosci and Stary Rynek, the Old Market Square.

When does the Poznan Christmas market open?

The MTP grounds site opens on 14 November 2026 and closes on 20 December 2026. Plac Wolnosci opens on 20 November 2026 and Stary Rynek on 21 November 2026, both running to 6 January 2027.

Is the Poznan Christmas market open on Christmas Day?

The Stary Rynek and Plac Wolnosci sites are scheduled through to 6 January 2027, which includes the Christmas period. Opening hours for individual days are published by the operator; check the Betlejem Poznanskie page for the daily schedule.

What food is Poznan famous for at Christmas?

The rogal swietomarcinski, the St Martin's croissant, a white poppy seed and almond pastry registered as a Protected Geographical Indication in October 2008. The Croissant Museum on Stary Rynek runs an English show about it at 14:00.

Is December a good time to visit Poznan?

For the Christmas market, yes: the market, the ice festival and Cavaliada all fall in December. WMO's 1991-2020 normals show a December mean of 0.9 C with 17.5 frost days, so pack for around freezing.

How cold is Poznan at Christmas?

The WMO 1991-2020 normals for the Poznan station give December a mean daily high of 3.2 C and a mean daily low of -1.4 C, with 40.1 mm of precipitation across the month.

Poznan's Christmas season rewards a little planning: pick your dates against the three-site schedule, book around the mid-December cluster of the ice festival and Cavaliada if spectacle matters, and use the Tuesday free-admission days at the National Museum branches for the coldest afternoons. More seasonal planning, from the Poznan Travel Guide home page, covers where to stay, how to get around and what the rest of the winter calendar holds.
